To ensure Solar Culture remains a safe, inclusive, and inspiring environment for all, we uphold a set of guiding principles that reflect the spirit of our mission. These values are influenced by timeless wisdom and our own experience as a community. By embracing these principles, we create a space where everyone can feel empowered, respected, and free to express themselves:
- Honor Our Roots: We respect those who laid the groundwork for this community – from our founders and mentors to every volunteer and artist who has contributed. Gratitude and humility toward our roots keep us grounded. We acknowledge that without the passion and dedication of those who came before, Solar Culture would not exist.
- Uphold Ethical Conduct: We conduct ourselves with integrity, kindness, and common sense. This means following basic rules of safety and respect (no violence, theft, or vandalism) as well as honoring the unique values of our space. We take responsibility for our actions and hold ourselves to a high standard of professionalism and positivity at shows and events.
- Foster Harmony and Community: Solar Culture is a family. We strive to get along and support each other rather than quarrel or compete. Conflicts or disagreements will be handled with compassion, open communication, and a solution-oriented mindset. Egos and grudges have no place here – what matters is our shared love of art and music.
- Practice Compassion: We approach everyone with empathy and an open heart. Jealousy, envy, or cynicism are discouraged; instead, we celebrate each other’s successes and talents. If someone is struggling or feeling left out, we lift them up rather than judge or exclude them. Maintaining compassion – even for those who may be different or difficult – is key to our community’s strength.
- Stay Committed in Challenges: We don’t give up on our values or on each other when times get tough. Even in the face of adversity or misbehavior, we remember our purpose: to help and inspire. This means we try to reach out and guide individuals who may be causing problems, rather than immediately abandoning or condemning them. We believe in second chances and the transformative power of kindness (while still maintaining appropriate boundaries for safety).
- Respect All Forms of Expression: Just as punk rock once expanded our minds, we know that inspiration comes in many forms. All art is accepted here – we do not dismiss or belittle any genre, style, or cultural expression. We keep an open mind about creative and spiritual ideas. In practice, this means everyone’s artwork can find a place on our gallery walls, and unconventional music is welcome on our stage. We embrace diversity of expression, trusting that every genuine creation has something to offer.
- Share Knowledge and Opportunities Wisely: We are eager to teach, learn, and share – whether it’s showing someone how to hang their art, use the sound system, or book a show. At the same time, we do so mindfully. Responsibilities (like handling equipment or curating events) are entrusted to individuals who have shown they are ready and respectful of the task. We guide newcomers and help them grow into new roles. In this way, we preserve quality and safety while welcoming new talent.
- Believe in Everyone’s Potential: Solar Culture is built on the idea that everyone is an artist or has the capacity for creativity. We see the innate creative spark and goodness in every person. No one here will tell you that you “can’t” do something or that you’re “not good enough” – on the contrary, we encourage you to push your boundaries. We never belittle someone’s potential or our own. With dedication and heart, anyone can create something beautiful, and all of us are constantly evolving.
- Balance Vision with Reality: We dream big and push boundaries, but we also stay grounded. In practice, we balance our lofty creative visions with practical efforts – mixing the spiritual and the real. This might mean combining art and business, or blending inspiration with perspiration. We neither get lost in abstract ideals nor bogged down by mundane details. By keeping one foot in imagination and one foot on solid ground, we’re able to sustain our culture and keep it thriving.
- Choose Positive Influence: We surround ourselves with people and influences that nourish our mission. Negativity and malicious behavior are not welcome to take root here. While we keep our doors open to anyone seeking community, we stay alert to those who might consistently slander, harm, or undermine others. We are kind to all, but we won’t hesitate to maintain a safe distance from destructive influences that refuse to change.
- Stay Humble and Purpose-Driven: No matter how successful a show is or how much acclaim an artist receives, we remember that ego is not the goal – genuine connection is. We keep our focus on why we do this: to spread art, music, joy, and unity. Arrogance, cliques, or superstar attitudes undermine the egalitarian spirit of Solar Culture. Each of us, from veteran musicians to first-time gallery exhibitors, is here to learn and share. By staying humble and anchored in our purpose, we ensure that love, patience, and kindness – not pride – leads the way.
- Be Generous and Inclusive: Knowledge, art, and opportunities are meant to be shared, not hoarded. If someone shows enthusiasm and sincerity, we welcome them into the fold. Mentorship is a cornerstone of our community – those with experience extend a hand to those with less. We avoid elitism or gate-keeping. In practical terms, this means we keep our costs affordable, our shows all-ages whenever possible, and we invite new artists and bands to participate alongside veterans. By sharing the spotlight and resources, we all shine brighter.
- Take Care of the Space: Solar Culture is more than a venue – it’s a sacred creative space that we all steward. We treat our gallery, stage, equipment, artworks, and artists with respect. Whether it’s having the proper tools and materials ready for a show, or simply cleaning up after ourselves, we each do our part to maintain a safe and welcoming environment. Being prepared and attentive to details (from tuning the sound system to stocking the restroom with supplies) allows events to run smoothly and honors the effort everyone has put in.
- Honor and Empowerment: We cherish the wisdom and contributions of women in our community, as well as people of all genders. Solar Culture was built on principles that recognize equality – “all men and women are equal” in their capacity for creativity, leadership, and enlightenment. We actively cultivate an environment free of sexism, harassment, or discrimination. Women regularly contribute as artists, musicians, organizers, and leaders here, and we hold their voices with the utmost respect. More broadly, diversity is strength: everyone is treated with respect regardless of gender, race, background, or identity. No one should ever feel unsafe or belittled in this space. If you are here, you are part of the Solar Culture family, and you are valued.
In living by these principles, often in subtle ways, we ensure that Solar Culture remains not just a gallery or a venue, but a loving community and a movement. We invite you to join us in embodying these values within our Creative Synthesis program. Together, we create a cultural sanctuary where art is transformative, music unites us. Thank you for being a part of Solar Culture, The SAFFRON Project, and for helping us lead the way – by example and heartfelt intention – in showing how creative community can thrive when founded on respect, inclusivity, and genuine love.
